事実は小説よりも奇なり。この言葉を知っていますか？イギリスの詩人、バイロンという人が言ったそうです。今日は、この言葉を思い出させる映画を紹介します。『LION～25年目のただいま～』という作品です。事実をもとに作られた映画だそうですが、まるでフィクションのようなストーリーでした。

1986年、インドのスラム街で暮らす5歳の少年サルーは、仕事を探すためにお兄さんと行った駅で、ひとり眠り込んでしまいます。起きるとお兄さんの姿はなく、お兄さんを探すために停車中の電車に乗ります。するとまもなくその電車が走り出し、家から遠く離れた大都市カルカッタまで来てしまうんです。そのまま迷子になったサルーは孤児院に入れられ、やがて養子としてオーストラリアで育てられて…。物語はなんと、その25年後に大きな展開を迎えます。

この出来事が世界的なニュースになったのは、2015年のことだそうです。私はそのことは知らずに映画を見たのですが、こんなことが本当に起きたなら、かなり話題になっただろうな…と思いました。それくらいたくさんのことが起きる、奇跡のような物語なんです。

Truth is stranger than fiction. Do you know this phrase? An English poet named Byron said this. Today, I would like to tell you about a movie that reminds me of this phrase. It's called "LION," and it's based on a true story. The movie is based on facts, but the story is like fiction.

In 1986, Saroo, a five-year-old boy living in the slums of India, falls asleep at a train station where he and his elder brother went to look for a job. When he wakes up, his brother is gone, so he gets on a train to look for him. The train departs and he ends up in Calcutta, a big city far away from his hometown. Saroo is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted and raised in Australia…. The story takes a sudden big turn 25 years later.

This story became worldwide news in 2015. I saw the movie without knowing that it was based on facts, and while watching it I thought that if something like this really happened, it would have caused quite a stir... It's such a miraculous story with so many twists and turns in the plot.
