さて、今日は4月の歳時記です。今回は、みなさんがあまり知らないであろう、きれいな日本語をご紹介します。

その前に…4月は、古い日本語でなんというか知っていますか？「卯月」です。卯の花が咲く月という意味の「卯の花月」を略したものだそうです。十二支の4番目が卯（うさぎ）なので、「卯月」といわれるようになったという説もあります。

この時期、日本では暖かくなったり寒くなったりして、なかなか気温が安定しません。このような天気のことを、「花冷え」と言います。花が咲く季節に一時的に冷える、つまり寒くなることから、こんな日本語が生まれたんです。なんだかおしゃれじゃないですか？

ちなみに、古い日本語で「花」というときは、桜を指すことが多いようです。この「花冷え」という言葉からもわかるように、桜は日本にとってとてもゆかりがある花なんですね。ぜひ、覚えて使ってみてください。

さて、今日(きょう)は4月(がつ)の歳時記(さいじき)です。今回(こんかい)は、みなさんがあまり知ら(しら)ないであろう、きれいな日本語(にほんご)をご紹介(ごしょうかい)します。

その前(まえ)に…4月(がつ)は、古い(ふるい)日本語(にほんご)でなんというか知っ(しっ)ていますか？「卯月(うづき)」です。卯(う)の花(はな)が咲く(さく)月(つき)という意味(いみ)の「卯の花月(うのはなづき)」を略し(りゃくし)たものだそうです。十二支(じゅうにし)の4番目(ばんめ)が卯(う)（うさぎ）なので、「卯月(うづき)」といわれるようになったという説(せつ)もあります。

この時期(じき)、日本(にほん)では暖かく(あたたかく)なったり寒く(さむく)なったりして、なかなか気温(きおん)が安定(あんてい)しません。このような天気(てんき)のことを、「花冷え(はなびえ)」と言い(いい)ます。花(はな)が咲く(さく)季節(きせつ)に一時的(いちじてき)に冷える(ひえる)、つまり寒く(さむく)なることから、こんな日本語(にほんご)が生まれ(うまれ)たんです。なんだかおしゃれじゃないですか？

ちなみに、古い(ふるい)日本語(にほんご)で「花(はな)」というときは、桜(さくら)を指す(さす)ことが多い(おおい)ようです。この「花冷え(はなびえ)」という言葉(ことば)からもわかるように、桜(さくら)は日本(にほん)にとってとてもゆかりがある花(はな)なんですね。ぜひ、覚え(おぼえ)て使っ(つかっ)てみてください。

Today’s episode is about the saijiki of April (see previous episodes where I discussed the term saijiki). This time I’m going to introduce a beautiful Japanese term that you may not know much about.

Before I talk about it… Do you know how to say April in the old Japanese? It’s called “Uzuki” (卯月). It is said to be the abbreviation of the term “Unohana-zuki” (卯の花月), which means “the month when the  flowers of deutzias bloom.” There is also the theory that April came to be called Uzuki because the fourth of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs is “U” (卯), which is a rabbit.

During this time of the year, the temperature in Japan is not very stable, sometimes getting warmer and sometimes getting colder. This kind of weather is called “hanabie(花冷え)” here. This term was coined because it temporarily gets cold or chilly during the flowering season. It sounds kind of smart, doesn’t it?

By the way, when you say “hana” (花) in old Japanese, which means flower, it often refers to cherry blossoms. As you can tell from the word “hana-bie” as well, cherry blossoms are deeply connected with Japan. Please try to remember this word and use it.
