みなさん、自分の国がいつできたか知っていますか？例えば、アメリカは7月4日が独立記念日ですね。その日はパレードがあったり、家族や友人とバーベキューをしたり、特別なことをして過ごす人が多いようです。日本にも「日本ができた日」があるんですよ。今日は、その日についてみなさんにお話ししようと思います。
日本ができた日は「建国記念の日」と呼ばれています。「国が建てられた記念の日」という意味です。毎年2月11日が祝日として定められているのですが、なぜこの日が「建国の日」なのか、日本人ですら知らない人が多いんです。恥ずかしながら私も知らなかったので、調べてみました。
実は、日本ができた日はわかっていないようですが、古事記や日本書紀などに残されている神話によると、紀元前660年の2月11日、旧暦の1月1日、なんだそうです。また、この日は初代天皇と言われている神武天皇の即位日でもあるんですって。明治時代になってから、この日が建国記念の日として祝日になりました。つまり、日本ができた日はわからないから、日本の最初の天皇が存在し始めたと言われている日を、日本ができた日として定めようということになったんですね。
こんな成り立ちの国は、けっこう珍しいんじゃないかなと思います。みなさんの国の成り立ちについても、ぜひ教えてください。

The day Japan was founded is called "Kenkoku Kinen no Hi (National Foundation Day).” It means the commemoration of the day Japan was founded as a nation. February 11 is designated as a national holiday every year, but many people, even Japanese, don’t know exactly why this day was chosen as National Foundation Day. It’s embarrassing for me to admit that I didn’t know either, but I looked it up.
Actually, the date when Japan was founded is not certain, but according to myths preserved in Kojiki and Nihonshoki, it was on February 11, 660 B.C., which is January 1 in the lunar calendar. This is also the date that Emperor Jinmu, who is said to be the first emperor of Japan, ascended the throne. In the Meiji era, this day has become a national holiday to celebrate the founding of the nation. In other words, since it was not clear on which day Japan was founded, it was decided to designate the day on which the first emperor of Japan is said to have come into existence as the day on which Japan was founded.
